Rules for carrying baggage on domestic airlines

Carry-on Baggage: You can bring a personal bag and one additional bag on the flight with you that meets the following conditions:

  • Both bags should not exceed 10kg (22lbs).
  • Size of carry-on bags on flights with above 100 seats: Width: within 55cm ×Height: within 40cm×Dimension: within 25cm
  • Size of carry-on bags on flights with below 100 seats: Width: within 45cm×Height: within 35cm×Dimension: within 20cm

Note: If your carry-on baggage exceeds the free allowance, you will have to pay Extra Seat Charge of 11,300 yen (depends on the route) for an extra seat.

Rules for carrying baggage on international airlines

  • Both bags should not exceed 10kg (22lbs).
  • Your carry-on bag should be within 115 cm (W: within 55cm×H: within 40cm×D: within 25cm). If your baggage is oversized, overweight, or can’t be stored in the cabin, it should be checked in cargo compartment at the boarding gate or cabin. Know more about carry-on baggage here.

Baggage Checked at Airport Counters: The checked baggage allowance depends on the class you are traveling with the airline. Below is the list of the quantity of baggage you can carry as per your class.

  1. First Class/Business Class: 3 Pieces with every single piece weighing not more than 32 kg.
  2. Premium Economy/ Economy Class: 2 Pieces with every single piece not weighing more than 23kg.

Every single piece should not exceed a maximum of 203 CMS (length+width+height) in total dimension.

Note: If your baggage exceeds the limitations of free allowance, you will have to pay additional baggage charges (tax included) according to your route. Excess liability charge is applicable on valuable items at the time of check-in to raise the limit of liability to the declared amount up to USD5,000.

As per the cancelation policy of Japan Airlines:

  • You must cancel your bookings at least 15 minutes before the departure of your scheduled first flight. No refund will be charged if the booking is canceled before purchasing the ticket. However, if you cancel your tickets after the purchase, it will be subject to designated Refund Charge and Cancelation Charge.
  • Online cancelation after the purchase of a ticket is only available for those passengers who have purchased tickets through credit card.
  • For domestic flight booking, if a ticket has been issued, a refund charge of 430 yen plus a cancelation charge will be levied per canceled ticket.
  • To request cancelation of your flight tickets purchased through www.ar.jal.co.jp, please contact their American Region Reservation Center by phone at 1-800-JAL-FONE (1-800-525-3663).
  • Bookings must be canceled before the departure of the first flight.
  • Once a ticket has been purchased through www.ar.jal.co.jp, the refund will be subject to a refund service charge or a cancelation penalty based on the fare rules, whichever is higher. However, no penalty will be charged for the refund if requested within 24 hours after completing the booking.

Since cancelations and refunds are subject to the fare rules, so it is recommended that you check the fare rules during the booking process.

In cases, where you have purchased a flight ticket from an agent, you need to contact them directly for any cancelation and refund-related queries.

Please note that the bookings must be canceled before the departure of your flight. All refunds for tickets purchased through the airline’s website will be subject to a refund service charge or a cancelation penalty as per the fare rules, whichever is higher. However, tickets can be refunded without penalty for online reservations if requested within 24 hours after completing the booking.

As per the airline’s booking policy:

  • Reservations can be made two months before the flight’s departure date (Exceptions apply for some fares types).
  • Passengers can book their Japan Airlines tickets through various credit cards such as VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Diners Club, regardless of the place from where they have issued it.
  • All changes or cancelations related to your booking must be done 15 minutes before the scheduled departure.
  • If you do not make changes to or and cancel your booking before the flight’s departure, your booking may not be changed to a different flight. This applies to the passengers with flight tickets that allow for booking changes. In such a case, only refund would be issued to the passengers.
  • Tickets refund is accepted no later than 10 days after the expiry of the ticket’s validity. If passengers cancel their tickets after purchase, it will be subject to designated Refund Charge and Cancelation Charge.
  • Group reservation for up to 6 passengers (Including adults and children) can be made on the official website of Japan Airlines.

Yes, customers may have flight ticket or surcharge ticket refunded. However, there are certain things customers need to know about the refund policy.

  • In case of all ticket refunds designated Refund and Cancelation charges will be applicable.
  • If you cancel a booking before buying the ticket, you will not be charged any Refund and Cancelation Fee.
  • All cancelations must be done 15 minutes before the departure of your scheduled flight.
  • Ticket refund is accepted not beyond a duration of 10 days after the ticket validity expired.
  • Refund exemptions are only applicable if a passenger or his/her travel companion are unable to board the flight and travel due to health reasons. In such a case, the ticket can be refunded without deducting any refund charge and cancelation charge but only on submission of a medical certificate issued by a physician.

Japan Airlines allows you to travel with your pets, however, some requirements need to be fulfilled for safe and comfortable travel of your pet.

  • Pets will travel as cargo on domestic flights and will be handled by JAL cargo.
  • Pets like dogs, cats, small birds, rabbits, hamsters, and other small animals are allowed.
  • French bulldogs, bulldogs, and pregnant pets are not allowed.
  • Dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks of age to qualify for travel.
  • Carry-on pets include goldfish, turtles, and insects as long as conditions to ensure other passengers are not disturbed are satisfied.

Pet Charges: ¥3,000 - ¥6,000 per pet crate per flight sector. These rates may differ depending on the traveler’s route.

  • Pet along with the crate, weighing 32kg or more will travel in the cargo.

Yes, Japan Airlines takes care of its passengers’ lost items and makes every effort to return them.  

If you are unable to find your bag upon arrival at your destination, please contact the airport staff as soon as possible. Once your baggage is found, the airlines will deliver it to your address.

If your baggage goes missing, the airline will inform you about the status of your lost baggage. And if your baggage is not found even after 10 days, airlines will assist you in claiming the compensation in accordance with Domestic Conditions of Carriage.

Yes, the airline allows you to make changes to your flight. However, all booking changes and cancelations should be made 15 minutes before the departure of your scheduled flight.

If you have not made changes or cancelations to your booked flight before its departure, your bookings may not be changed to a different flight.

Japan airlines unaccompanied minor service ensures your child boards the aircraft safely, is introduced to the flight attendant, and finally released to the appropriate person at their destination. However, there are certain rules for unaccompanied minor service.

  • Children under the age of 5 years may not travel alone under any circumstances.
  • Children 2-14 years old can travel as an 'accompanied minors' with someone 16 years or older.
  • Children between the age group of 5-7 can only travel on nonstop or direct flights.
  • Children aged between 8-14 can travel on any nonstop or direct flight, or any connecting flight through Charlotte, NC (CLT), Washington Reagan, D.C. (DCA), Dallas Forth Worth, TX (DFW), New York, NY (JFK and LGA), Los Angeles, CA (LAX), Miami, FL (MIA), Chicago, IL (ORD), Philadelphia, PA (PHL) and Phoenix, AZ (PHX).
  • Children in the age range of 15-17 may or may not use the unaccompanied minor service as per their wish.
  • Children aged 16 years and older traveling alone can be booked online, but to book children 15 years of age, you need to call the Reservations department of the airline.

At the airport

  • Customers will have to pay an unaccompanied minor service charge of $150 (plus tax) each way.
  • 2 or more unaccompanied minors from the same family, traveling on the same flights, will only be charged $150 (plus tax) each way.

Restrictions

Unaccompanied minors are not accepted when their itineraries include:

  • A connection to/ from another airline, this also includes codeshare and one world partners.
  • Ground/co-terminal connections (unaccompanied minors under 15 years are not allowed to use ground transportation alone.
  • The last flight of the day from the final connection city, unless it’s the only flight offered.
  • Overnight connecting flights, unless it's the only scheduled flight offered.
