When traveling with Lufthansa Airlines, you will be charged if your baggage exceeds the permitted weight and size limit.

In Economy/Premium Economy Class, a piece of baggage weighing more than 23 kg (up to a maximum of 32 kg) and/or is larger than 158 cm (the sum of width X + height Y + depth Z up to a maximum of 292 cm) is considered as excess baggage.

In Business/First Class, a piece of baggage larger than 158 cm up to a maximum of 292 cm in total is considered as excess baggage.

Carry- on Baggage

As per the baggage rules of Lufthansa Airlines, you can carry one item as carry-on baggage with you, such as a trolley case, a compact, foldable baby buggy or a foldable garment bag, or two items in Business or First Class.

Permitted size:

  • Dimensions for carry-on baggage: max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm
  • Dimensions for foldable garment bags: max. 57 x 54 x 15 cm

Permitted weight based on travel class type:

  • Economy Class- 1 item of carry-on baggage up to 8 kg
  • Premium Economy Class- 1 item of carry-on baggage up to 8 kg
  • Business Class- 2 items of carry-on baggage, each up to 8 kg
  • First Class- 2 items of carry-on baggage, each up to 8 kg

Checked-in/Free Baggage Allowance

Irrespective of your travel class, you must adhere to the checked-in baggage limitations mentioned below:

  • Economy Class: 1 item of baggage FREE (up to 23 kg)
  • Premium Economy Class: 2 items of baggage FREE (each up to 23 kg)
  • Business Class: 2 items of baggage FREE (each up to 32 kg)
  • First Class: 3 items of baggage FREE (each up to 32 kg)

Based on European fares, free baggage allowance is also applicable to:

  • Economy Light: 0 FREE (only carry-on baggage allowed, no free baggage allowance, checked-in baggage is subject to a fee)
  • Economy Classic: 1 FREE (up to 23kg)
  • Economy Flex: 1 FREE (up to 23kg)
  • Business Class: 2 FREE (up to 32kg)

Excess Baggage Information

In Economy/Premium Economy Class, a piece of baggage weighing more than 23 kg (up to a maximum of 32 kg) and/or is larger than 158 cm (the sum of width X + height Y + depth Z up to a maximum of 292 cm) is considered as excess baggage.

In Business/First Class, a piece of baggage larger than 158 cm up to a maximum of 292 cm in total is considered as excess baggage.

Lufthansa offers a hassle-free cancelation and refund policy to its customers. You can cancel your booking and get a refund online up to 24 hours before the beginning of your trip.

For reservations made seven days or more before the flight’s departure, cancelation will be free if you cancel within 24 hours of making your booking. In a few cases, consequential charges may be applicable based on your fare. Normally, reservation cancelation fees for travel from the U.S. can range between USD 250-1,000 (per passenger).

To cancel a booking, log in with your credentials by visiting the homepage or go to My Bookings section on this page. Fill in the details to access your bookings and click on Cancel to cancel the relevant booking.

Upon successful cancelation, you will receive a confirmation email.

However, depending on the type of ticket purchased, the process for cancelation and refund will vary. For example, if you cancel a booking which was made through a travel agency and not directly with Lufthansa, you will need to contact the agency directly for requesting a refund.

Yes, Lufthansa tickets are refundable. You can cancel your reservation online and get a refund up to 24 hours before the beginning of your trip. For flights that were not purchased via a Lufthansa office or lufthansa.com can be canceled online, but, for a refund, you will need to contact the travel agency that issued the ticket.

You will be refunded for your ticket in the currency in which you paid. If you made the payment in a currency other than euros, the refund might take a bit longer.

If you paid in cash, you would get the refund online once you share your bank account details upon request by the airline.

If your flight gets canceled by Lufthansa due to disruptions, you will be refunded free of charge.

Advance seat reservation for First Class

If traveling on a long-haul flight, you can avail advance seat reservation free of charge. It applies to Premium Economy Class, Business and First Class. But, advance seat reservation on continental feeder flights is subject to a fee.

You are permitted to carry your pet (dog, cat, hare or rabbit) with you on any of the Lufthansa flights. But, before booking a flight with your pet, please go through the following information carefully:

Transportation of pets is possible either as excess baggage in the aircraft’s air-conditioned cargo hold or as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin but at an extra cost depending upon the kind of animal, its weight and size, and the regulations applicable in different countries.

For the above-listed animals and other species also, Lufthansa Cargo offers the facility of pet transport. In case of assistance dogs, special rules apply. However, due to local circumstances and restrictions, the transportation of large animals in the cargo hold is not possible to certain destinations. Small dogs and cats as carry-on baggage in the cabin

Only smaller dogs and cats weighing no more than 8 kg including their transport container may be transported under certain conditions as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin. While larger dogs and cats and all other animal species, irrespective of their weight and size, are not allowed to travel in the cabin.

If you are carrying your pet with you in the cabin as carry-on baggage, you need to give your confirmation, stating that the animal meets the transport criteria. Larger Dogs and Cats, Hares and Rabbits as Excess Baggage in the Cargo Hold

Dogs and cats weighing more than 8 kgs including their transport container, as well as hares and rabbits, maybe transported as excess baggage in the aircraft’s air-conditioned cargo hold under certain conditions.

Assistance dogs

Recognized assistance dogs, such as guide dogs and hearing dogs, can be transported in the cabin on all Lufthansa flights for free. Emotional support dogs can also be carried free of charge on routes to and from the U.S.A.

If you are taking an assistance dog with you into the cabin, you need to give your confirmation that the animal has passed the transport criteria required as per the rules. For this purpose, you need to present two copies of the fully completed and signed SVAN or ESAN form at the check-in counter.

  • The Lufthansa baggage tracing desk at the airport, or

Upon receiving the detailed description of the missing item, the airline carries an intensive search to locate the item in the shortest possible time. Once found, you will be contacted on the contact number you have provided.

In case, individual items or the whole of the contents are missing from your baggage, you should report this as soon as you arrive at the airport. For this, you can either contact:

Whether you want to rebook or cancel a flight, make an advance seat reservation, request special meals, or book a Rail&Fly ticket at any time, you can do that without any hassles. You can also book a hotel or a rental car directly, or even take out travel insurance.

Yes, Lufthansa allows you to add or change seats later. You can reserve your seat after the completion of your booking and up to 52 hours before the departure. To book or change your seats later, go to ‘My bookings’ section. Please note that the changes can only be made to seats at the same or a lower price, and charges already paid will not be refunded.

A confirmed advance seat reservation does not give you a legal right to a particular seat on board the aircraft but only to the selected category such as aisle, window, seat with more legroom).

Lufthansa’s unaccompanied minor policy ensures complete safety for children right before the take-off time till they land.  

Children between the age group of 5 and 11 years can avail this service to fly unaccompanied or if they are traveling with someone who is at least 12 years old. Children aged from 12 up to a maximum of 17 years old and are traveling alone, can also be taken care of at the request of their parents.

Upon arrival, the flight crew will hand your child over to a staff member at the airport who will further take the child to meet the person who is receiving them. If you are availing this special service for your child, please ensure your child is picked up immediately at the destination airport.

If your child is traveling on a flight operated by a carrier other than Lufthansa, you must directly contact the respective airline to know about its rules and policies for unaccompanied minors.

In addition to the airfare, Lufthansa will charge you for this special service (per route and child).

For flight segment within Germany or Europe- EUR 60 (USD/CAD 90)

For intercontinental flight segment- EUR 100 (USD/CAD 150)

Travel documents

As soon as you book the flight, you should inform the airline that your child will be traveling. It is recommended to use the checklist for unaccompanied children provided by the airline. It contains all the information and the necessary documents, useful tips on booking, check-in, carry-on baggage, free baggage allowance, and collection at the destination. At the airport, your child will be given a small yellow Lufthansa bag which they should keep with them visible throughout their journey. The bag should have the following necessary travel documents:

  • valid passport/child’s ID card
  • visa for the destination country
  • the completed special service form
  • travel insurance certificate
  • information on any allergies the child may have
  • receipt for pre-paid charges for the special service, if applicable
  • declaration of consent from parents/legal guardians that their child may travel unaccompanied

Booking

Tickets for unaccompanied children can only be booked via the Lufthansa Service Center or at your travel agency and cannot be booked online. For any doubts, please contact the Lufthansa Service Center.

Baggage for Unaccompanied Children

The size of the carry-on baggage for your child may be the same size as permitted for an adult. However, your child should be able to carry the bag easily without any assistance. The bag should include any medicines to be taken during the flight or at the destination, some money, and warm clothing.

Please also ensure that your child’s checked-in baggage does not exceed the free baggage allowance.
